Included in the lot are presentation copies of Sylvia's influential history, The Suffragette Movement (1931) and Ethiopia and Eritrea (1953), written with her son Richard (eulogised in the present letter). Phyllis Bailey, the recipient of this letter, was Sylvia Pankhurst's first cousin, her mother Effie being a younger sister of Emmeline.

Estelle Sylvia Pankhurst (1882-1960) was the second daughter of Richard Marsden Pankhurst (1835-1898) and Emmeline Pankhurst née Goulden (1858- 1928).

A suffragist, activist, and socialist born in the late-Victorian era, Pankhurst occupied the intersectional space between feminism, social justice, labor rights, and decolonization in early 20th-century British politics, presaging the radical politics lefties love Sylvia Pankhurst has been called “the greatest Englishwoman of the twentieth century”. Sylvia tells the story of her youth, starting in her childhood in a radical Man­chester family when she longed to become an artist “in the service of social betterment” and won three art scholarships, including one to Venice.
